Then Charles Goodyear discovered how to cure rubber, a material which in its natural form could not be molded. Uncured rubber was too soft and sticky to be of much practical use, but with the process of vulcanization, dentists soon began to make denture bases out of vulcanized rubber. And it was from these molds that James Woodruff is credited with having made the first rubber stamp. Soon enough, rubber stamps were being manufactured by many companies, and found employment everywhere, particularly with the postal service, which is likely where we get our stereotypes of clerks and their passive-aggressive inclinations when wielding rubber stamps!
